Latest set of Panda Talks webisodes put Energy Consumption and Plastic Pollution in the spotlight

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines tackled two of the most pressing environmental issues in the country today for the latest leg of Panda Talks—the organization’s free live educational web series aiming to equip the Filipino people with knowledge on key environmental issues.
The Great REset: Energy in the New Normal
With energy consumption becoming a prevailing issue during the quarantine, WWF-PH Climate and Energy Programme Head Atty. Angela Ibay, together with Miss Earth 2017 and WWF-Philippines Advocate Karen Ibasco, talked about the basics of energy, the importance of conserving energy, and the different sources of and access to renewable energy last August 21, 2020.

The duo opened the session by discussing the concept of electricity and the science behind it, as well as giving the audience a background on the different types of energy and power. Atty. Ibay also gave the viewers a behind-the-scenes view on how electricity is produced and transported in the country and explained how it impacts the environment.
The speakers also highlighted the importance of renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as gave tips on creating more environmentally-friendly choices when it comes to energy consumption, highlighting how our actions at home can help the energy crisis that the country is facing.
Atty. Ibay closed the talk by discussing the opportunities present for green recovery in this new normal. “We have to focus on the long-term needs of the Philippines, and [to be] more self-reliant as a country, by tapping our bountiful energy sources and implementing stronger energy initiatives.”
Usapang Plastik Pollution: 10 Questions from Pinoy Social Media
In celebration of the International Coastal Cleanup Month this September, the eighth episode of Panda Talks, which aired last September 25, 2020, focused on the issue of plastic pollution. In partnership with Project IWASTO and hosted by WWF-PH National Ambassador Rovilson Fernandez, the show featured WWF-PH’s National Lead for the No Plastics in Nature Initiative and Project Manager for Plastic Smart Cities, Czarina Constantino, and the UP Institute of Civil Engineering’s Director and Professor, Dr. Tonette Tanchuling.

From discussing the effects of the pandemic on our plastic usage and consumption, to exploring the feasibility of living in a plastic-free world, the speakers answered the top questions collated from WWF-PH’s social media followers.
The speakers also discussed the different types of plastics and the impact of each kind to the environment. Viewers were encouraged to be more mindful about their plastic consumption to inspire fellow Filipinos, and to also push and demand large corporations and government units to promote responsible plastic use and a more circular form of waste management and recycling.
A Q&A session wrapped up the discussion to address further questions from the audience about the plastic situation in the Philippines.
