Forester
BASED IN: WWF-PH HQ, frequent visits to Ipo, Norzagaray, Bulacan and other project sites
Supervision
The Forester is under the direct supervision of the Vice-President for Programs and will be providing technical support to all forestry-related projects and/or activities of WWF-Philippines. He/She will be assigned mainly to the 5-year Ipo reforestation project being implemented by the organization. He/she is expected to perform regular field visits to the assigned site/s and will work closely with the Project Manager and the Community Organizer in various aspects of the project.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and implement the 5-year Assisted Natural Regeneration and Enrichment planting (ANR-EP) plan and budget. Prepare detailed operational budget for each batch of seedlings. Validate assumptions, g. labor costs, used in budgeting.
- Review the community land use Evaluate the community-identified candidate
sites for ANR-EP as to successional status, extent of grasslands with pre-existing trees;
proximity to remnant forests and barriers to regeneration such as weed competition,
fire threats, human and animal disturbances. Prepare report. - Recommend reforestation strategies and measures to address threats such as fencing,
fire breaks, patrolling. Develop and implement a monitoring protocol. - Prepare a manual guide for community The manual would instruct members on
“how to’s” in identifying and maintaining the target seedlings, ring weeding, applying
fire breaks and pressing. Orient and train WWF staff and coop members on the use of the manual. - Work with the WWF GIS officer in mapping forest-related projects. Set up a monitoring system to include data collection, databasing of target seedlings and tracking growth and survival rate
- Conduct monitoring visits and collect Assess the performance of the PO
cooperative and report findings - Provide support to the fundraising team in creating project proposals with forestry-related components
- Plan and conduct forestry-related activities in other project sites; e.g., tree inventory, survey, and research work
Qualifications
- Educational Qualification:Licensed Forester with minimum two years’ experience in implementing reforestation projects, preferably using ANR-EP
- Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in community engagement
- Strong communication and inter-personal skills
- Good decision making skills, organized, and takes the initiative;
- Willing and able to travel
- Ability to speak the local language in place of assignment
