The Arctic is among the most at-risk ecosystems in the world, and its disappearance could mean severe flooding and grave changes to the tropical climate of the Philippines. The world is at risk as global temperatures soar and the ice caps continue to melt – and WWF-Philippines, together with SM Supermalls, are here to ring the bell.
On the 20th of July, 2019, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines helped launch SM South Luzon’s latest interactive exhibit, Arctic in the South, at the mall atrium of SM Dasmarinas.
Approximately 4 million people live within the Arctic region, around 10% of which belong to indigenous groups. The Arctic also plays host to a large variety of unique species, including polar bears, walruses and narwhals. Extremely sensitive to changing climates, the Arctic region is important in maintaining global temperatures and sea levels. The loss of Arctic ice poses a threat to all life on Earth – a threat which SM Supermalls has taken to task.

WWF-Philippines National Advocates Xia Vigor and Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco helped host the launching of Arctic in the South. The launch began with two clips from Netflix and WWF’s Our Planet documentary series, which outlined the importance of the Arctic and what must be done to protect it. This was followed by a song and dance number, with neon lights flashed against a white curtain. The curtain dropped as the number concluded, revealing the Arctic in the South exhibit.
“Together, our micro-efforts will have a macro-effect to help save our home, our planet,” reminded Ibasco, speaking before the audience gathered for the exhibit’s launch. WWF-Philippines works with its partners and the public to support and promote practices for a sustainable tomorrow.
The Arctic in the South exhibit is aimed at children, with the purpose of educating passing shoppers on the importance of the Arctic and the impact global warming has on this fragile ecosystem.
