BUILD BACK BETTER BOATS
WWF-Philippines' Build Back Better Boats Project aims to create a new modern design of boat that will be faster, better, stronger so that it can be of use to fisherfolk for decades to come.
Building Stronger Boats, Stronger Communities
For generations, fishing boats in the Philippines have been more than just vessels—they have been a source of livelihood, shelter at sea, and a lifeline for families. Yet many traditional wooden boats remain vulnerable to rough waters and extreme weather, putting both lives and livelihoods at risk.
The Bigay Tibay Boat Project
Through the Build Back Better Boats Project, WWF-Philippines, together with premier industrial designer Mark Bautista and partner fishing communities, successfully developed and introduced the Bigay Tibay Boat—an innovative fishing vessel designed to be safer, stronger, and more resilient for the challenges of modern-day fishing.
Built with a steel frame and a compartmentalized double-hull design, the boats are designed to better withstand strong waves while reducing the risk of sinking. They also feature practical innovations such as a covered fish hold, dedicated fish cleaning area, solar-powered lighting, and improved workspaces that make fishing safer and more efficient.
Empowering Fishers Beyond the Boat
The project went beyond providing new boats. Fishers actively participated in constructing the vessels and received hands-on training, equipping them with valuable technical skills they can use for boat maintenance, repairs, and alternative livelihood opportunities. By strengthening local knowledge and capacity, the project helped build more resilient fishing communities prepared to adapt to changing conditions.
Creating Lasting Impact
Implemented with fishing communities that have long partnered with WWF-Philippines through the Sustainable Tuna Partnership, the project strengthened ongoing efforts to promote responsible fisheries and community resilience. It demonstrated how innovation, collaboration, and local participation can improve safety at sea while supporting sustainable livelihoods for generations to come.
Help Us Create More Success Stories
The success of the Bigay Tibay Boat Project is proof that investing in people and sustainable solutions creates lasting change. With your support, WWF-Philippines can bring similar innovations, skills training, and community-driven solutions to more fishing communities across the country—helping build safer livelihoods and healthier oceans for the future.
