Compost Your Food Waste in Just a Few Taps with SoilMate Mobile App
June 2021
On June 25, 2021, WWF Philippines virtually launched through Zoom and Facebook Livestream the first ever composting mobile app in the country—SoilMate. The launch, entitled “SoilMate Mobile App: Compost in Just a Few Taps,” was hosted by Ms. Karen Ibasco, WWF-Philippines’ Ambassador.
The event started off with Ms. Monique Mahusay, SoilMate Project Coordinator, who highlighted the rationale of the Soilmate Project. “We should at least divert unavoidable food waste away from landfills through composting. This time, we will convert them into a valuable resource for our soil, which is compost,“ Mahusay said.
Ms. Rina Papio, the Chief SoilMate of Green Space, went on to showcase the notable features of the SoilMate Mobile App and Green Space composting service. “With Book-a-Bucket, you just need to collect food waste in your Green Space composting bucket, when your bucket is full, we will get them and compost them for you,” she explained. Living in a world heavily reliant on mobile technology has its advantages that can be used for the greater good. Papio chides that “...the next time we look around and we don’t find food waste na kakalat kalat, truly we can say - “kaka-cellphone niyo yan!”” ("...the next time we look around and we don't find food waste strewn all over the place, truly we can say - "it must be your cellphones!")
SoilMate offers smart management solution that allows users to greenly manage their food waste through (1) different composting subscription plans, (2) hassle free book-a-bucket exchange, (3) easy account monitoring, (4) tracking your food waste generation and GHG avoidance, and (5) earning compost credits and rewards.
App users can opt to donate their earned compost and Gulay bag to the partner communities and garden beneficiaries like Good Food Community and Urban Green Communes, making food waste a valuable resource instead of trash. The mobile app is now available to download in App Store and Google Play Store.
SoilMate can make a difference in the current management of waste especially in the urban setting. WWF-Philippines hopes this initiative will eventually help reduce the amount of waste we generate as a nation and lessen our dependence on landfills. WWF-Philippines looks forward to working with like-minded "SoilMates" who share the advocacy of managing food waste, and building healthy soil to produce quality food for all.
