WWF-Philippines National Youth Council Release Open Letter to the Youth, Urge Next Generation Toward Climate Action
April 2021
On the 27th of March, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines’ National Youth Council (NYC) released a video urging Filipino youths to take climate action and to speak out for the environment.
The video, “An Open Letter to the Youth,” was released as part of Earth Hour PHlix, a web series held by WWF-Philippines in celebration of Earth Hour Philippines 2021. Earth Hour PHlix gathered WWF-Philippines Ambassadors and various experts to discuss practical steps Filipinos could take in order to make their lives more sustainable.
The hashtag #SpeakUpForNature, the theme of this years’ Earth Hour, asked individuals to share stories of why nature matters to them while encouraging them to learn more about pressing environmental issues. Through their recent video, the NYC is urging youths to actively push for climate action and conservation.

“Let us push for a green and sustainable future of reduced waste, zero extinction, and where our carbon footprint is halved; Let us be guided by science and reach out and listen to all stakeholders of Philippine society, most especially the least heard and the most vulnerable, because our voices can change the world,” narrated by WWF-Philippines NYC Member Nikki Huang, addressing Filipino youths through the video.
With nine years left to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the NYC points out the effects of continuing environmental degradation. Citing massive deforestation and plastic pollution statistics as well as last years’ high incidence of household hunger, the NYC stressed the need for immediate environmental action for the sake of the planet and mankind.
Scientists also predict that should environmental goals not be met by 2030, the world may be set for catastrophic climate change.
“Climate change is inextricably linked to some of the most pressing issues facing the human race, and it is only by using our voices that we have a fighting chance at a better future,” added Huang.

The youth continue to speak up for nature as time runs out in the push for climate action and conservation. Youth groups like WWF-Philippines’ NYC are pushing the youth to take the lead in protecting the planet, urging governments, businesses, and individuals alike to come together and to stand for the environment. Support WWF-Philippines and the NYC, and help build a future where man lives in harmony with nature.
